The Practical Method of Grandmaster Hong Junsheng

Grandmasters Chen Fake and Hong Junsheng

Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method was formally introduced by Grandmaster Hong Junsheng, in his book published in 1988. Hong Junsheng was one of  Grandmaster Chen Fake's earliest disciples having studied from Chen Fake for 15 years from 1930 till 1944. The Practical Method is distilled from the teachings of Chen Fake and Hong Junsheng.

Gong and Fa
In Practical Method, Gong (Foundation/Power/Skill) and Fa (Form/Technique) are unified at the core of the training method. This means that the movements in the training routines are taught and practiced exactly as they will be applied in fighting and push hands. Yin and Yang, which must be present in every action, are not to be perceived simply as separate entities. Rather, they must be experienced as an integral unity.

Practical Method Power

Grandmaster Hong believed that the concept of power is an important distinguishing feature of systems. Among internal martial arts systems, Xingyi and Baqua genuinely aim to generate internal power. In Taiji, there is no real power generated. Instead, it is a "perceived power" that Taiji is concerned with.

Superior and Supernatural Skills

Grandmaster Hong also believed that Taijiquan is a traditional Chinese martial arts with a rich accumulated repertoire of knowledge. However, there is nothing supernatural about it. He advocated that "superior and super-natural like" skills can be developed through precise movements based on the rules of Taiji, which in turn adhere to laws of physics.
